Research Opportunities at Cardiology Fellowship Programs

Cardiology Fellowship Programs with a Research Pathway

The American Board of Internal Medicine provides opportunities to become involved in research by taking the research pathway for completion of various cardiology fellowship programs. The research pathway integrates training in research and clinical internal medicine for those who are seriously pursuing careers in basic science or clinical research. The ABIM research pathway requires core clinical training but also provides a research experience that is comprehensive in terms of time, formal curriculum, structured evaluation, and feedback. For those interested in research careers, they should begin working with their residency program director and training mentor to design an appropriate training plan that will provide adequate clinical experience and meet ABIM requirements. Planning should begin during PGY-1 and by spring of PGY-2 ABIM should be notified. The internal medicine program director must be in support of the trainee’s request to pursue the training pathway. Moreover, it’s worth visiting our site where you may get additional information about cardiology fellowship personal statement.

Training for a Сardiology Research Fellowship

All trainees in the research pathway must complete 24 months of accredited categorical internal medicine training. At least 20 of those months must be spent on direct patient care responsibility. For the cardiology fellowship programs an additional 24 months will be spent on the trainee’s sub-specialty clinical training. Research training will require 36 months with 1 day a week being spent at ambulatory clinic. It will take a total of 7 years for completion. If a trainee desired cardiac surgery training as their sub-specialty, another year would need to be completed for a total of 8 years. The certification exam in internal medicine must be completed before certification in a sub-specialty. Certification in internal medicine will require competency in the following:

  • Patient care and procedural skills
  • Medical knowledge
  • Practice-based learning and improvement
  • Interpersonal and communication skills
  • Professionalism
  • System-based practice

Trainees will have to choose between two research training roles. These are the basic scientist and the clinical investigator. The basic scientist training focuses on research methods, information and data management, statistics, experimental design and grant and manuscript writing. The clinical investigator will focus on clinical epidemiology, genetic epidemiology, pharmacology, behavioral sciences, medical economics, medical outcomes and public health or health systems research. Researchers will be evaluated on quality of research and have to meet a number of requirements as set forth by the ABIM. Besides, you may discover more about preventive cardiology fellowship on our site.
