Vast Break In Interventional Cardiology Fellowship

Purpose of interventional cardiology fellowship

A branch of cardiology known as interventional cardiology deals with the catheter based treatment of structural heart diseases. There are a fairly large number of procedures that can be performed on the heart by specialists in interventional cardiology. These include angioplasty, valvuloplasty and coronary thrombectomy. A fellowship in interventional cardiology is meant to provide the necessary skills and instruction for the fellow to perform the various procedures independently. Intervention cardiology is recognized as a sub-specialty in cardiology by the American Board of Internal Medicine, and as such there are requirements that must be met to be ABIM certified.

Requirements for interventional cardiology certification

The general requirements that physicians must meet to become certified in the sub-specialty of interventional cardiology are as follows:

  • Must maintain current, valid ABIM certification in cardiovascular disease
  • Satisfactorily complete the required formal training and procedural requirements as specified in the the clinical training pathway
  • Demonstrate clinical competence, procedural skills and moral and ethical behavior in the clinical setting
  • Hold a valid, unrestricted and unchallenged license to practice medicine
  • Pass the interventional cardiology certification exam

The second and third of the above requirements will generally be satisfied through completing an interventional cardiology fellowship in a program that is ACGME accredited. The training provided by the interventional cardiology fellowship programs should last for a minimum of 12 months. To satisfy training and procedural requirements the fellow must have performed at least 250 therapeutic interventional cardiac procedures, documented in a case list and verified by the program director. The procedures must have been judged by the program director as satisfactory. To count the fellow must have participated in the planning, have performed critical technical manipulations during the procedure, and be substantially involved in post-procedural management of the case. Clinical competency requirements in 6 areas are verified by the training program director to ensure competence in

  1. Patient care and procedural skills
  2. Medical knowledge
  3. Practice-based learning and improvement
  4. Interpersonal and communication skills
  5. Professionalism
  6. Systems-based practice

Finding and applying for a interventional cardiology fellowship

Some candidates may already know of interventional cardiology fellowship programs or heart failure fellowship programs they would like to apply for. For those who don’t, an interventional cardiology fellowship programs list may be obtained by using FREIDA Online (Fellowship and Residency Electronic Interactive Database). It contains all the graduate medical education programs in the United States that are ACGME accredited, and can be used to search for programs by specialty. Application to various fellowship programs is made through ERAS. An applicant should register with ERAS and submit all the required documents. ERAS in turn will submit the candidate’s documents and information to any of the fellowship programs requested. Registering with the National Residence Matching Program is also necessary. The applicant should list all of the programs they wish to apply for in order of preference. The NRMP matches all applicants for fellowship programs to fellowship programs available.
