Heart Failure Fellowship And Heart Transplant Fellowship

Heart Failure Fellowship Programs

It is only recently that the ACGME (Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education) has begun granting accreditation to various institutions sub-specialty programs in heart failure and heart transplant. The American Board of Internal Medicine now has a set of procedures and requirements in place for those who want board certification in the Advanced Heart Failure and Transplant Cardiology sub-specialty as it is officially known. For several years there were two pathways that could be taken in order to be able to take the advanced heart failure and transplant cardiology certification exam. The two pathways are known as the training pathway and the practice pathway. However, the exam to be administered in the fall of 2014 will be the last that first-time takers of the exam will be able to qualify for using the practice pathway. After that anybody taking the exam for the first time will follow the training pathway which involves completing some requirements in a heart failure fellowship. The change is due to there now being accredited heart failure fellowships, whereas before no such accreditation existed.

Advanced Heart Failure and Transplant Cardiology Certification Requirements

A total of four years of specific training must be completed to meet requirements. Three years of training in an accredited cardiovascular fellowship program of which 24 months total is full-time clinical training. Another 12 months of clinical advanced heart failure and transplant cardiology fellowship training should also be completed. Heart failure fellowship training taken from July 2014 onwards must be an ACGME accredited program. If heart transplant fellowship training was taken prior to July 1, 2014 the program must be affiliated with an accredited cardiovascular disease program. ABIM will require documentation that shows candidates for certification are competent in the following six core areas.

  • Patient care and procedural skills
  • Medical knowledge
  • Practice-based learning and improvement
  • Interpersonal and communication skills
  • Professionalism
  • Systems-based practice

The heart failure fellowship training program director must verify to ABIM that competencies have been met.
